DNA Day is commemorated nationwide to honor the discovery of DNA's double helix and the completion of the Human Genome Project. In 2003, the United States Congress designated April 25th, the 50th anniversary of the publication of the structure of DNA and the date of the achievement of the mapping of the sequence of the human genome, as DNA Day. Since then DNA Day has been celebrated on different dates, but always in April.
The purpose of DNA Day, beyond honoring historic breakthroughs in genetics, is to enhance public awareness of genetics.
Illinois DNA Day In Illinois the focus of DNA Day is on genetics education and the importance of family health histories. At health departments, colleges and high schools throughout the state, people celebrate DNA Day and learn about genetics.
