The University of Illinois at Chicago-Midwest Latino Health Research Training and Policy Center was granted funding by the Illinois Department of Public Health for the Genetics Public Education Project as part of the Illinois State Genetics Plan. The overall goal of this project is to increase genetics and genomic awareness and literacy among the general public of Illinois. We will be promoting family health history, the Illinois newborn screening program, and an annual DNA Day campaign through the media and educational activities.
Our bilingual English/Spanish Web site is designed to make it easier for people to understand the basic concepts of genetics. Educational materials, including bilingual English/Spanish brochures have been developed to increase awareness for the general population of family health history and the state’s newborn screening program. These materials are posted on this Web site.
In 2009, the UIC Midwest Latino Health Research Training and Policy Center will be training community health workers to educate Hispanics to use family health history to identify their risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
We would like thank our partner, the Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders, for sharing their resources and for their continuing collaboration for the 2009 Illinois DNA Day campaign.
