Grassroots Community Health Leadership Program

The  Grassroots Community Health Leadership Program  is an initiative designed to build capacity in Chicago area community organizations to address the social determinants of health related to diabetes and CVD in vulnerable populations.

Participants commit to a sequence of monthly one-day sessions meeting from March to October 2009. Each session consists of a half-day presentation by a national or local expert in collaboration and public health sciences followed by an afternoon of individualized technical assistance. Participants will develop and implement projects in their neighborhoods utilizing the expertise of the visiting presenters and the CEED@Chicago staff.

March 2009: Social Determinants of Health This session will discuss the concept of social determinants related to health outcomes in vulnerable populations. Presenter: Linda Rae Murray, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer, Primary Care and Community Health Ambulatory and Community Health Network of Cook County of Chicago

April 2009: The Public Health System: What it is and How it Works The structure of the public health system will be discussed in terms of the various organizational relationships that comprise public health practice, including governmental agencies, the nonprofit sector, and larger societal institutions that have an interest in public health. Presenter: Patrick Lenihan, PhD, Executive Director, Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago, Director of the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) Program, UIC

May 2009: Coalition Building and Community Mobilization Collaboration Collaboration and coalition models of partnership will be presented as a model for assessing community need, prioritizing interventions, and developing effective partnerships to positively impact community health. Upstream determinants of health status will be considered in the design of strategy to address cardiovascular disease and obesity. Presenter: Arthur T. Himmelman, Consultant

June 2009: Leadership and Community Health The role of leadership will be considered at the community level, and within the governmental public health system. Key personal leadership competencies will be discussed, including political management, inspiring a shared vision, and organizational vs. system leadership.

July 2009: Policy Advocacy This workshop will present policy from the perspective of local and state legislative processes, administrative policy, and advocacy tools for policy change in governmental and business organizations. Emphasis will be place on tools that can be easily implemented at the community level, as well as linking policy initiatives to social determinants.

August 2009: Cultural Competence The role of culture will be explored from the perspective of individual and organizational competencies that facilitate effective community health initiatives. Additionally, cultural factors that impact community health will be explored in the context of urban health and health disparities.

September 2009: Media Skills, Technology and Communication Print, broadcast and internet media will be explored as tools for delivering community health messages and engaging partners in community change. Media literacy skills will be emphasized to provide participants with an understanding of media ownership and the impact of media messages on community health and behavior.

October 2009: Community-Based Participatory Research/Project Presentations Community-based participatory research will be discussed as a strategy to link academic and community partners in research initiatives that benefit and support local initiatives. Participants will also present the highlights and results of their community projects.
