Frida Kahlo Community Organization Legacy Project
FKCO plans to enhance the capacity of local Health Promoters, Promotoras de Salud, by partnering with the University of Illinois at Chicago 's (UIC) Midwest Latino Health Research, Training and Policy Center (MLHRC). The MLHRC will provide training and technical assistance to the community using the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) curriculum. The FKCO will work with four Pilsen schools to recruit 15 parents and community members to participate in the DEEP.
The FKCO anticipates that the DEEP can be implemented in other communities in the City of Chicago and suburbs where the agency has developed strong relationships with school administrators. The FKCO will also consider implementing a diabetes prevention workshop and the sharing of educational information at the Illinois State Bilingual Parent Conference.
