History of CEED

In 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health 2010 (REACH 2010) Initiative. The University of Illinois at Chicago, in partnership with a coalition of community-based organizations, received a five-year grant to address diabetes disparities in Southeast Chicago. Additionally, the University of Illinois at Chicago and these community organizations collaborated with the Chicago Department of Public Health to address cardiovascular disease disparities in the North and South Lawndale areas. In October 2007, the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Chicago Department of Public Health received a REACH US grant that supported the creation of a Center of Excellence in the Elimination of Disparities (CEED) in Chicago for the continuation of community initiatives. CEED@Chicago is one of 18 grantees addressing health disparities nationwide.
